Work at Home Tips
Working at home is NOT something that everyone can do. Plain and simple. Too many people fall into the hype that "anyone can do this!" the line that so many companies and individuals use to try to get you to sign up for their program or business. Among other things, running a business out of your home takes dedication, discipline, creativity, and being able to make tough decisions.

Today's Work at Home Tip: Know when to ask for help and do it! Too many times when someone has their own home based business, they think they have to run every aspect of their business themselves and are either too afraid, or worse yet, too proud to ask for help. The sign of a good business owner is the ability to know their limits. As your business grows you may not be able to "do it all". You want to be able to have resources and people that you can bring on board, even before you are at the point of needing them. This is part of good business planning. It is the sign of a smart work at home mom, who is humble enough to admit she can no longer do it all on her own anymore. When you are at the point that you are not able to handle all the tasks at hand - it is time to reach out to others for help. |
Whether it be just a little extra help from your spouse and children, or whether you need to step it up to where you hire an outside source, be sure to make that step and not put it off. Not only will it lessen the stress load on you, it will free up your time from doing tasks that others could easily learn, so that you can focus more on the growth of your business and putting your talents to their best use.

Hi Cyndi. I liked your blog about home-based businesses not being for everyone. I'm single mom of 2 and currently working a 9-6 job. Now at the age of 31 I've pretty much decided that I'm pretty good at data entry, but am unable to find an work-at-home business that is as basic as that, and will pay me for my experience or give me the time I need. In the multitude of home-based businesses, I feel like a tadpole in a sea of information. I'm not a sales person, and don't care to be. Do you have any suggestions?

Hi Cyndi - you are so right on! Working at home is not for everyone. It takes dicipline, dedication and organization out the ying-yang! I currently have a 9-5 job, am a single mom and trying to get my own home business off the ground. I have finally learned that if you do not ask for help when you need it and not before it is too late staying on track is much easier and less stressful. I also have learned to write everything down - that helps keep me on track as well. A shameless plug for myself....check out my website at www.readlaughandlearn.com - I have a large selection of storybooks for children of all ages that can be personalized with yoru child' information - you child becomes the STAR OF THE STORY!! Check it out!!!!

Ok I totally agree that it isnt for everyone.
If you dont have sell dedication and self dicipline then it is hard to succeed and I know that from experience. It took me a year to realize what I was doing wrong but now that I know its starting to work!
Thanks for the info!

Cyndi - This is absolutely true! I tried to completely work at home without an outside job. It wasn't all it was cracked up to be. I know personally several people who do make it work and it works wonderfully for them, but I'm not the type of person who can just go out and get sales. I'm too shy and unable to speak to just "anyone". So, I do still do some work from home, just not all of my work is that way. I prefer the consistancy of a regular 9-5 with a normal paycheck and use my work at home stuff as extra. Thanks and have a wonderful week!

I love your tips, I am trying to make a home business work now that my kids are in jr high and high school. My husband and I have been working on building loftbeds and are tyring to make it work. We have had quite a few orders so far. So I hope those that can work at home do it, I like it soooo much better than the nine to five.

I agree that working at home is not for everyone. It's hard and takes hard work. I hate it went I say I work at home and the person's attitute says "that's not the same as really working" . It isn't the same it is much more difficult. My personal struggle is where the line is between work and home. Somedays I look around the house and see the mess that my 3 yr old and his daddy have left and think I have to clean this up, then I think but I told my boss that I would finish this spreadsheet today! Yikes!!! And it is expecially hard when the 3 yr old is already at his grandma's and the weather is beautiful and my horse is saying "come on this pasture is really boring, let's go for a ride" and I have work sitting in my office that has to be done. With the go to the job kind of employment, these kind of things are not there and tempting you to put off the work. But for me and my family, being home is important so I have to have the will power to do the work and being here with my son is my motivation...so I get the work done.
